Can you remember the last time that you met a 5 year old that loved sitting still in a chair for over 7 hours a day? Neither can I! At this age, kindergartners love, & need, to move! Why should we expect these busy little friends to come in and do the exact opposite? In my classroom our motto is, "We work hard so that we can play hard!" With your help we can help my sweet students learn in an environment that encourages them to be successful & have a little bit of fun too. Flexible, or alternative, seating allows students the opportunity to have some freedom and choice in their learning environments which helps them to develop responsibility, a self awareness of learning styles, and social skills as they collaborate with their peers. With the increase of choice, students have a sense of ownership in their education & are more engaged, motivated, & generally more satisfied. Gone are the old school days of desks & tables in straight rows with students silently staring at the teacher. That just doesn't meet the needs of these 21st century learners as we prepare them for the real world beyond the walls of the school building. I personally work best with some sort of background noise & the ability to move around, & I want my students to have the same opportunity. With your help, I hope to provide my new babies with chances to work on the floor, sitting down, or even standing! Wobble stools & exercise balls are just a few of the options that I hope to have in my classroom. Clipboards will allow students to move around the room. So are you ready to help me give these students the best introduction and transition into elementary school possible?
