When students are learning English, we begin with the fundamentals. Let's be honest, it's not the coolest thing to be in fourth or fifth grade and be caught reading books about bunnies and kitties. By having the books, students will be able to maintain their reading skills in their native language and also read literature that is age appropriate. Children deserve to choose interesting, age appropriate books. Books and series such as the Magic Tree House, Fly Guy, Junie B. Jones and Captain Underpants have captivated readers for many years; I want that excitement and interest for my ESL students. Also, how cool is it for English speakers to see their favorite books written in other languages? It would spark an interest of other people and languages outside of their own.
