This is an exciting time in education because we can offer a wide variety of experiences that cannot be reproduced in the typical classroom environment in order to accomplish this goal using virtual reality. For instance, I teach in the Midwest, and so for my Oceans class using VR would help my students to further understand why the oceans matter. Or, how about for my Natural Disasters class a close-up look at a tornado and the damage experienced by actual people, human beings just like them? The use of Virtual Reality can further develop empathy, which will most likely lead to a student-led service project. This type of learning is powerful because students come to know that even though unfortunate things happen in our world, they have been empowered to make a difference in the world, despite their young ages. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of living in a world where it is considered progress to spend billions of dollars to find life out in the universe, while simultaneously spending even more killing the life on this one. What we need is more cultural understanding, global awareness, perspective, empathy, compassion, and kindness. What we need are people who can work together, think outside of the box, share ideas, and solve problems. What we need is to equip our children with this skill set because the children are our future. To do so, we need the cardboard viewers and unlocked cell phones. That’s where this fundraiser comes in! Help me give my students a field trip experience even when we can't leave the building.
