My school is a high poverty school; my students come to school to have better lives than their parents do. Myself along with my colleagues are committed to helping these kids succeed. Some of them see us as surrogate parents that provide much more for them than just lessons. Some days we feed them, other days we donate clothes, supplies, etc. Our students are in dire need for various things: attention, mentorship, friendship, and love. We can begin addressing these issues, but we are able to more fully focus on the real reason we became teachers when the pressure to provide tangibles is relieved.
