Students will choose books from our classroom library to house in their book boxes for independent reading time. Students will be able to work on fluency by having access to the same book for repeated readings. They will be able to choose books that match their reading levels and individual interests. These book boxes will be used for years to come! During our literacy center time, I am focusing on reading with small groups of students during guided reading. The rest of the students need to be able to work independently and quietly on their selected tasks. As you can imagine, keeping 20 six and seven year olds engaged for over an hour each day on independent work is quite a feat. The way I have found to accomplish that is to provide a plethora of highly engaging activities and student choice. Students will be able to access our literacy center activities housed in a cubby system and will have a variety of activities and games to choose from. This enhances their engagement and excitement about learning and allows me to meet with four guided reading groups each day while they are busy working.
