A large percentage of students at my Title I urban school do not have strong coping skills or effective anger management. But they need these skills to learn in large classrooms with a variety of stressors. Creating "cool-down corners" with tool-boxes of calming toys and prompts in every classroom or instructional space will enhance both academic learning and social emotional development. The cool-down corners will enable my students to practice strategies taught during individual counseling, small groups, and class lessons without disrupting the education of others or taking too much time away their own instruction. Classrooms with designated de-escalation spaces meet the needs of children who have experienced trauma, have ADHD or other mental health needs, or just need a time and place to refocus and cheer themselves up. Students will be better equipped to handle their emotions constructively and maintain positive learning behavior. The learning must go on!
