First graders love to learn and are learning how to learn! This past year I used project-based learning activities to help with student engagement and motivation. This year I would like to use the Lakeshore STEAM activities to go along with our literacy units. For example, instead of only reading fairy tales, students will have to use higher-level thinking as they listen, read and then be able to create their own bridge design for the Three Billy Goats Gruff or the houses for the Three Little Pigs. Students will be exposed to the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve). I will use a plethora of books such as Snowflake Bentley, If I Built a Car, & Inch by Inch to connect with the other activities. Taking students from basic or Surface Learning to meaningful, authentic, lifelong learning takes time and lots of practice. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student engagement, you will ultimately help to increase students academic achievement by increasing opportunities for Deeper Learning. This is just the beginning! By the end of the year my goal is for students to choose their own authentic project which would include STEAM and non-fiction informational reading & writing. This bundle will help 100% of my students become better lifelong learners!
