Our library has always been the hub of our school. Because of our flexible schedule in the past, students could come and go at any time during the day to spend time in the library and find new books. This year, with our new distancing mandates, our library runs quite differently. I'm proud to say that it is still open, and ALL students can still come to get books, but we are now on a fixed, weekly schedule. Because we are trying to keep numbers down in related arts classes, the library has now become a class period for 1st and 3rd graders. That means I get to see these sweet faces daily and not only help them find books but also teach lessons. One way I would like to reach all students during this class time is by having library centers. Because of Covid social distancing rules, though, I can't have more than 3 kids in a group doing any single activity. We have some fun STEM robots as well as some wonderful ebooks and audiobooks, but the technology in our metro Nashville school library has been lacking. I would love to have a BIG iPad Pro that pairs of students could use to listen to picture book read-alouds that I have recorded. So many of our 1st graders can't read with fluency yet, and listening to books being read develops their vocabulary and reading skill. I also teach 3rd grade, and we do a Caldecott Club every year where we closely look at the art in picture books. The iPad Pro and Pencil will be utilized to mark up interesting details that the students find in the illustrations. I will also use the newer model iPad to power our STEM robots robots in centers.
