My students will receive their own copy of a Scholastic News weekly reader and a Science Scholastic News reader each month. These magazines are specifically aligned to the course of study for our grade level and subject content. My students LOVE Scholastic News readers! The material in them is very engaging for students. With each subscription to the magazines, students also receive online access to videos, games, and other articles that are relevant to the current Scholastic News magazine. Every month is a new topic that corresponds to what is happening in that month. September usually has something to do with apples; October usually is about fall, pumpkins, and Halloween, etc. Since our school district does not currently have a specific Science and Social Studies curriculum (it is embedded in our Reading series), these magazines come in really handy! When teaching a lesson with the Scholastic readers, I usually start with a short video from the website, then read the magazine and do the activities that are included. The activities are fun and engaging for the students. We usually make something that corresponds to the lesson or we play a game that goes along with the magazine. It is always fun for my students.
