First grade is a year when kids make tremendous growth in reading. They have mastered the letters and sounds and have a good foundation on sounding out words. To build on these skills students in my class get immersed in reading by listening to other read or by reading themselves aloud or silently. Reading silently is difficult when students are at the early stages of literacy. They need to hear themselves make the sounds in order to know what word it is they are reading. This can make for a very noisy and distracting classroom. I would like to get whisper-phones for each student in my class. These are simple u-shaped tubes that they whisper into and their voice is amplified into their own ear. Having these will help my students become better readers as well as keep our classroom less distracting.
