My classroom is currently set up as a science classroom, with out-of-date lab tables and chairs. I find that some students often lean back in their chairs, because moving helps them concentrate. Other students cannot learn well at all sitting down, so ask to stand up at my counter in order to work more efficiently. While I often allow one student at a time do this, it doesn't work well since the counter is where Science labs or other projects are set up. Kids all have different learning styles and they need the tools to support the way they best learn. Flexible seating options like Stand-Up Desks and Wobble Chairs would be an awesome way to help students find a comfortable way to learn the way they learn best. It will help them also to be more active while learning, which research shows greatly improves student concentration. This project is kid-inspired because on multiple occasions they have come up to me and asked if they can sit or stand in different areas of the classroom, in short, they are asking for flexible seating options! I would love to be able to give them that option - it would both encourage and inspire my kids, helping them concentrate to do their best work.
