Every morning, 50 fifth and sixth graders from this richly diverse rural school of 299 students in the lowest income county of Michigan rush to eat breakfast and leave their friends to attend before-school choir practice. In just one semester, these youngsters, many who are identified with special educational needs, have graduated from straight unison-style singing to two-part choral repertoire and choreography. Potential soloists eagerly take the microphone to audition for solo opportunities. They have performed at church and community events to great acclaim. The choir, which was formed three years ago with just twelve students, was recently featured in a two-page article and photo spread in our region's largest newspaper. I am justifiably proud of these children, many of whom come from extremely compromised home and family settings, for choosing to spend their before-school free time to engage in an activity that takes discipline, commitment and stamina.
