These activities will make a difference to all my students. New books at their level and interests fuel a love for leisure reading and build self confidence. I have a rug in a quiet area where students can read and relax when they start to feel angry or upset. That is a signal for me to have a quiet conversation with that student. Board Games help facilitate skills like taking turns, patience, how to be a good winner and loser and how to play fair. I have had the worst enemies in my room forget their quarrels while playing Connect Four or any board game. I initially help facilitate game playing to teach taking turns, fair play and to start conversations about family, sports, etc. Students eventually see each other as friends and not adversaries. Floor puzzles build confidence and friendships. They encourage students to work cooperatively to achieve a similar goal. Students who can build friendships and self regulate are better able to learn and retain information in the classroom.
