Our inner city classroom is large and spacious but lacks more than basic furniture. We have a combination of desks and group tables. My students though prefer to work on the floor for the majority of their daily tasks. We use hands on, student driven learning in small groups and partners. Often times the students can not get close enough to each other to work well together. Our STEM type projects require students to work closely with small materials. In each subject we work in rotational groups and centers. Each day we converge on the rug for all types of discussions. It is the one format where I find the most focus from each student. They are closer to me and I can see their faces looking and ready to learn. A large, thick classroom rug would work best for the majority of our daily activities. The students would all benefit from having a central, comfortable and welcoming space to gather.
