I teach juniors and seniors in a rural east central Illinois high school that is 89% white students with 39.7% considered low income and 2.2% considered homeless. My junior classes learn analysis skills through American literature and a variety of writing assignments, including research and presentations. My senior classes are dual credit classes that I teach through a local community college. These are usually college-bound students in the upper 25% of the class trying to save money by earning general education credits while in high school. The two classes--Composition 1 and Introduction to Literature--are each taught as semester courses, so the seniors are learning the style of college courses with the benefits of a high school safety net.
