My students are entering into a new unit on social justice issues. My vision for this unit is to start with personal biographies and accounts in picture books. I want my students to understand and make connections with people and situations that may be outside their personal experience. I also want them to find connections with people who have lived through similar experiences and have articulated that experience, I believe this can impact my students perceptions and promote critical thinking. Our focus is on immigration issues, civil rights, voting rights, access to education, women’s rights, and overall ways to become active in social issues. I need your help to create a library of books to help guide our study and conversations. I feel these picture books have the ability to help students become familiar with these issues. Your support would mean a great deal to my students and me. The reason I have always loved to teach middle school is that this is the age where you start to notice and think about issues outside of yourself and your personal family. My students are ready to dig into social issues and learn about the world around them. The only thing stopping us is a lack of resources in our school and classroom libraries. This is where you come in. With a donation you can help us learn though multiple texts about people and situations that affect our world. Help us learn about Malala, the girl who fought for education in Pakistan, or Sonia Sotomayer, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Help us learn about desegregation through the book Separate is Never Equal, which helps older children understand the importance of the 1947 ruling that desegregated California schools. Thank you for helping me educate our children!
