I am working hard to build the reading culture in my classroom and my school. By reframing my priorities and curriculum, independent reading was brought to the forefront of my classroom rather than continuing as an afterthought. Students were given free choice, time, and access to a diverse selection of books within the classroom. We had book talks, book interviews, poetry responses to books, theme analysis writings, conferences, and connection activities. Students were reading more and many were excited to do so. I built my classroom library through buying books at used book stores, Friends of the Library sales, and taking donations from friends, family, and colleagues. I am looking to expand the library even more with more diverse titles to fit the needs and desires of my students! Reading opens our minds, helps us understand ourselves and others, and develops our empathy; therefore, attempting to instill a love for reading in my students is paramount.
