My school will be piloting a new program that incorporates STEAM2 into our students' learning day. STEAM2 stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math and Medicine. Creativity knows no boundaries with STEAM2 activities. Using Legos to incorporate STEAM2 into the classroom opens up a whole new world for our students creativity and critical thinking skills. We will be using the Legos to challenge student's thinking and allow them to solve problems by building projects using Legos. I will be utilizing the Lego kits mostly during my study hall class. I plan on reserving at least one day a month that is dedicated to STEAM2 activities and these kits would bring materials in to my classroom for students. A challenge will be given at the beginning of class and students can work in teams to come up with the best solution to solve the problem. Also, if students do not have work to complete, the Lego/STEAM2 activities can be chosen as an option to fill their time. An example of the challenges that will be given include having students use scale factor to create similar shapes/objects, finding volume and surface area of objects, etc. An engineering example could be having students build a structure that could withstand high winds of a hurricane or tornado. Another challenge could be to design and build your own park or house.
