My first grade students come from low income families. A high percentage of my students are on free or reduced lunch. A good majority of them live very close together in low income housing down the street from our school. A lot of our "beginning of the year" school supplies come from generous donations. Some of the families don't even have a vehicle to drive to our public library. And to be honest, when these hard working parents have two to three jobs to get by, reading success is not the highest priority.
