My students inspired this project by their determination to participate in physical education activities both in gym class and at recess with their peers. Students with autism face many challenges that can make physical education difficult for them including limited motor functioning, low motivation, difficulty in planning and self-monitoring, as well as the increased auditory, visual, tactile stimuli and social interactions they must engage with in order to participate. Obesity rates for children with disabilities are approximately 38% higher than for children without disabilities. The addition of physical activity to an autism intervention program can help overcome many of these challenges and improve overall quality of life. Exercise can help my students improve their overall motor function, learn valuable cooperative and team-building skills, and help regulate behavior. Some materials will help my students more easily access their physical education classes - with supportive seating, they can join their same-age peers sitting on the gymnasium floor. With modified sports equipment such as lightweight balls, they can be more successful with visual tracking and experience a higher level of success, helping to build their self-esteem. Integrating exercise and movement breaks into our classroom routine and learning experiences will help students be able to more easily access their curriculum, as well as help them meet the requirement of 60 minutes of physical activity per day to keep them healthy and strong.
