A major focus in today's educational field is applying learning to real-world situations. Having the tools for students to apply their learning to real-world situations is necessary for students to make meaning of their learning. Yet, students are not prepared for the application portion because they are not provided the hands-on materials that are needed. Teachers, like myself, are dipping into their own pockets to provide the tools necessary to ensure students are prepared. Research shows that play and involvement are more meaningful to education than worksheets and textbooks. The tools I’m asking for help to purchase include center activities that students can use manipulatives to practice and solve math and science tasks. Kid friendly step by step instructions are included so that students can work independently while I’m working with small group rotations. Many of the tools (such as the counting tubes and counting bugs) are self-checking which provide the students with feedback in real time so that they are able to fix their work while the task is still fresh in their mind. This is much different than students completing worksheets, teachers taking them home to grade and then returning the papers a few days later. The assignment no longer has the same meaning and students may already be working on another task. Please help my students prepare for real-world applications of their learning by giving them the opportunity to play with educational materials that have meaning.
