My students at Lucy Craft Laney @ Cleveland Park Community School in North Minneapolis are vibrant, energetic, enthusiastic, and full of love. Over 90% of our children identify as African American and come from a low-income background. Our school is Title I with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our students describe Lucy Laney as a safe place and as their home. Lucy Laney is indeed one big family where everyone is loved, cared for, and taught to be the best that they can be. Through music class, my students not only learn how to sing and play instruments, they learn life skills such as cooperation, respect, how to listen and focus, and how to participate well within a group. They experience success and learn how to take risks, which enables them to have continued success throughout their lives.
