When asked to describe my students and classroom, family comes to mind. I teach a multi-age special education class of 15 wonderfully energetic, enthusiastic and hard-working kindergarten, third, and fourth grade students! All of my students have varying learning abilities, but their one commonality is their earnest desire to read. They struggle with reading fluently and for my older students, their differences are beginning to stand out as they make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. They often voice that they are "failures" because they cannot read and/or comprehend grade level texts. Thankfully, our school has a cohesive group of regular education and special education teachers who work together to ensure that our shared students become fluent readers. All of my students work 1 on 1 and in small groups to improve their reading skills. They realize that "reading is the magic key" to take them where they need to be in order to reach their reading potential!
