I spend a lot of time making copies to ensure that my students are being hands on with their learning. As a matter of fact, every test that I assign is printed and handed to my students. I tested my students using paper the first week of school and the results were satisfactory. I recently tested my students via computers for the state testing and was alarmed! Their performance declined by an average of 75%! This rose a ton of questions. Why? Upon reflection of the testing days ( it took 3 days to take a 34 question test,) I remembered it taking 10-15 minutes for the students to log in due to a lack of typing skills and overall computer literacy. I also spent a lot of time helping them scroll on the Cromebooks due to a lack of a mouse. This also made me fearful of the actual end of year test. I was slapped in the face with the reality that my students would be required to TYPE short and constructed-response answers! It would be a disservice to them to develop writing skills over the course of the year and then place them in front of a Cromebook without the ability to type. Computer literacy is a fundamental skill to survive in our society. I have to get my students access to Cromebooks daily to harness the skills they need to make it academically and socially.
