My students all have special needs, primarily consisting of visual and hearing disabilities. They all attend a special elementary school here in Alabama for the hearing and visually impaired, and they range from ages 3-12. They are energetic, outgoing, loving students who have been dealt a more difficult hand at life than their typically developing peers. However, when the music starts, we're all the same, speaking the same language - MUSIC. They laugh, play instruments, dance, sing, write music, make up activities, and most importantly learn together in a safe and happy environment. Through music therapy they are learning social skills, following directions, coordination and balance, gross and fine motor skills, cognitive skills, and even academic skills. It is simply magical to watch the students discover their own strengths through the power of music.
