I strive to provide a wide selection of books for my students; although, currently more than ninety percent are fiction. At the third grade level, half of the books students read should be informational text. For this reason, I am working to expand the number of biographies within my classroom. Students should see their background represented within the classroom library. I would like to add a wide range of biographies with special emphasis on African Americans, Latinos, and women to help meet that need. Some requested titles include Anne Frank, I am Amelia Earhart, By My Brother's Side, the I Am series, Ray Charles, Freedom Song The Story of Henry "Box" Brown, Salt In His Shoes Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream, Harriet Tubman, Diego, and Jackie Robinson and the Story of All Black Baseball. All the books that I have selected have comprehension quizzes on Accelerated Reader, so I will be able to track their progress and ensure students are reading books at an appropriate level to maximize their reading growth.
