At Abraham Lincoln, we are looking to dedicate a space specifically for students to use if they need to self-regulate their bodies or their emotions. We plan to purchase specific tools for students to use including sensory socks, weighted blankets, and sensory putty, just to name a few. Along with these tools, students will also take part in social/emotional skill groups to practice how they can become their own best advocates. Self-regulation is a skill, so let’s teach it! Kids aren’t born knowing how to self-regulate any more than they’re born knowing how to tie their shoes.” As special education teachers, we understand how important it is for students to have access to tools, but also for students to be able to identify their own needs and utilize the appropriate tools.
