Thank you for taking time to read about my class. We are an alternative school program, the students are not your typical students. They thrive in a small, non-traditional setting. To accommodate a variety of grade levels and individual student needs, we incorporate an online program that is tailored to the academic needs of the student. While that may sound great, it means they sit all day at a computer. I am looking for alternatives to the uncomfortable, plastic chair. If you have ever sat through a meeting or training you can feel their pain. They beg for comfortable seats. Flexible seating allows for them to take control of their learning environment. It is theorized that a student can maintain concentration while seated on the stability ball because the unstable surface requires continuous, yet minor movement. In a sense, the stability ball allows the student to “fidget” or move their body inconspicuously, which then helps the student to stay focused while seated. Stools are designed to improve posture as well as incorporating many of the "fidget" movements while providing a more stable seat. Bean bag chairs and floor loungers will allow the students to work on a laptop while sitting or laying in the floor. Each of these allows the student to have a choice as to what would work best for them. They ability to give them choices for seating will improve their time on-task, increase their productivity and lead to positive behavior improvements.
