Our sixth grade students would love to participate in a hands-on project to bring their selected books for their book report to life! Creating pixel art of characters, the setting, or a scene from their book will build comprehension and confidence as they use their finished product as a visual of their completed report. To accomplish this task we are requesting a variety of Perler beads, an iron, ironing paper, organizer, and project boards for the student workstation so that students can complete their projects. Perler beads are plastic fusible beads that students will arrange on plastic pegboards to form patterns. When their design is ready, I will fuse it together with a clothes iron. The plastic storage bins will provide organization for the beads and tools. With 25 or more students working at the same time, it is imperative to provide an organized space for students to design. I believe that this creative opportunity will engage students in their own learning. This project is the beginning of creating a Maker Space in our Media Center to serve all grade levels and curriculums. Collaborative projects supporting science, social studies, and math curriculum will follow. The goal is to provide a space for discovery, creation, and education so that students can turn a thought into a learning experience, driven by curiosity and experimentation.
