These are just a few quotes from my students that have made it apparent to me that greater technology access is needed in my school. As a traveling science specialist in a high-poverty inclusion school, I see 230 students a week spanning grades K0/K1-5. Several times a week, I wheel two to three carts into each classroom chock full of science equipment, animals, and plants, as well as art and notebooking supplies, ready to provide my students the 21st-century science curriculum they deserve. My school also has an Outdoor Classroom. Here, I can take students outside regularly to conduct hands-on investigations, teach note booking skills, and foster inquiry skills and an appreciation of nature. For so many of my urban students, experiencing science in the Outdoor Classroom marks the first time they've ever dug under logs to look for worms, observed and drawn the parts of a flower, or learned how to pick up an ant with care. It is truly magical to pay witness to these first moments.
