Our 2nd graders have learned about the different reading genres. We chose to host a Stone Soup Family Engagement Night based on this topic. Using several different versions of the folktale, Stone Soup, we plan to have families work together to determine the reason there are so many different versions of the same story. Our hope is to not only give families some strategies, tools, and resources to help their children read better but to also broaden the horizon of understanding about different cultures as well. Often times as educators we witness the narrow-mindedness that surrounds those who occupy the lower end of the socio-economic class, in which our school resides. We desire to help these families change their perceptions and bring to life a change in both academics and understanding of various cultures.

About my class
