My students are fifth graders getting ready to take a giant leap into the world of common core. This new curriculum not only expects them to form their own opinions but to back them up with actual evidence. It is vital that they learn to be independent readers and information- seeking students before they enter the world of researching and providing evidence. In order to be prepared for that next step as learners, they need access to informational reading that is at their level. I teach some very inquisitive and motivated pre-teens who absolutely love reading about the real world. They are eager to prove their points and to find answers to their questions. They just don't have enough opportunity to get familiar with searching for evidence in information pieces of writing. I believe this will become easier with more practice.
