My goal is simple—make reading more social! Middle school students are already social beings, so I want to make reading social so they’ll do more of it. How? By starting Partner Reading. Students will read in groups of two or three once a week for 15-20 minutes. They'll read aloud, they'll ask questions, they'll interrupt, and they'll laugh. By the end of a school year, they will have spent an extra 12 hours reading! Unfortunately, my students currently fight over the "good" books in our classroom because I simply don't have enough books to go around. They play rock-paper-scissors to see who gets the one copy of Guinness World Records from 2006, but I want them ALL to have a book they love! I need books that are meant to be read socially, meant to be read by two students today and then picked up by two different students next week. I need books that draw students in and beg to be shared with a partner. Middle school students are social creatures by nature, but I want them to become readers by nature too!
