This novel, set in 1924, tells the story of a small Vermont town that has been invaded by the Ku Klux Klan. Eleven characters take turns sharing their thoughts and experiences as KKK comes into town and attempts to recruit members of the community. Each of the eleven speakers comes from different backgrounds which affects each individual character’s point of view. Karen Hesse's Witness allows students to glimpse into the past and see how easily a community can be negatively impacted by hate. My goal is for students to understand that they directly influence their community. As we read the novel together, students will carefully analyze point of view and how certain characters develop and change over time. Through discussion and journal entries, students will explore the effects of being a bystander and grapple with the fact that one person really can make a difference-for better or for worse. Once we have finished the novel, students will participate in a “kindness project”. In small groups, students will first identify an area of need in the school and then make a plan to take action. Examples may include students doing random acts of kindness, writing positive notes to other students or staff, or even putting together a small community service project. Students will have to explain how their project positively impacted the school.
