I have a gifted class of 23 eager first graders. On most mornings, the students engage in the infamous "Pencil War". Yes, they race in to get the sharpened pencils before they run out! We are a Title I school with majority of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Therefore, getting school supplies to come in are extremely difficult. In addition to pencils, pencil bags would serve as an organizational tool to help students keep up with their sharpened pencils. This would allow us to have more instructional time than focusing on who the pencil belongs to. Receiving an easel, would greatly help during small group. Easels provide a portable center for reading, writing, and differentiated instruction. My students often complain of not being able to see the board. If we have an easel, it would be used to accommodate those students, including intervention times. The easel would be a model for strategies specific to the activities presented.
