Flexible seating in a classroom allows students to take control of how they want to learn in an environment that caters to their needs. Currently, I do not have any type of flexible seating in my classroom; I just have tables and chairs. By giving students the opportunity to sit on swivel stools, ball stools, wobble cushions, bean bags, floor desks, or the traditional chair and table, they are able to choose what they like to learn in best. Taking Covid-19 safety precautions in mind, all flexible seating options that have been chosen are able to be sanitized and moved to maintain social distancing. This ensures all students feel safe in the classroom, which allows them to learn better. Using safe sanitation methods and seating charts will allow students to have the freedom to sit where they want, experiment with different flexible seating options, and take care of our classroom by cleaning it often while still being able to track potential exposure. Some of the seating options I have chosen, such as the wobble cushions and swivel stools, allow students to move while remaining stationary, which can help some students focus more on their work while still being able to get their energy out. Other options, such as the bean bags and floor desks, give students seating that is comfortable and stable. I have seen the positive affects flexible seating has had in other classrooms and I would like to duplicate that in my own room!
