As a first grade teacher, it can be difficult to keep the attention of a classroom full of 6 and 7 year olds! Research tells us, the more engaged students are in their learning, the more information they will retain. In order to meet the needs of my students, I chose a variety of seating options to allow my students the opportunity to feel comfortable to make choices about how they learn in the classroom. Being uncomfortable while trying to absorb and apply knowledge makes for a very long school day. Being comfortable sets students up for success. They are able to focus less on the setting, and more on the learning. Having a flexible seating classroom with wobble cushions and cuddle chairs will give them choice in the kind of learning space that works best for them, and helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.
