The books I have selected will help raise awareness of social and emotional issues that frequently occur in a child's life. Many of my students do not know how to deal with their emotions or social issues and need more guidance on how to handle them. With these books, students will be able to relate to the characters in the books with some of the same issues. The books have been selected to introduce so many concepts. Some of the concepts that are mentioned are bullying, self-esteem, confidence, learning to control impulses, making good choices, and handling consequences. Sometimes students do not understand what is going on with other students in the classroom. By reading some of the books selected, students will have a better understanding of what is happening, for example, like losing a loved one or a student who has ADHD. Often times we as teachers assume students have been taught how to handle these issues before coming to school; however, sometimes this is not the case. To ensure a better learning environment, it is a must these issues be addressed inside the classroom. By donating to my project, you will not only help promote awareness to emotional and social issues that students face today, but you will help improve the quality of life for so many students who lack the guidance in these areas. These books will be read during our class meetings or individually. With the reading of the selected books, conversations will spark and open dialogue for understanding, healing, and ownership. Our children need us, and you can help make that change. What better way to increase awareness than with a book that will promote reading achievement!
