Just like "If you give a mouse a cookie", if you give students a bilingual library, they will read, and read, and read! I would like to engage children in interactive read-alouds in their first language to help them build comprehension skills and expand their vocabularies. It is important that we have L1 (first language) books in our classroom because they include cultural aspects of the Spanish language, which are important to impart to children who are learning a new language or developing in their native language. It is important for me to promote the early literacy instruction in Spanish because it can also give children a head start on learning to read in English, putting them on track to becoming not only bilingual, but also biliterate.
