Henry Ward Beecher said, “A little library, growing larger every year, is an honorable part of a man's history... A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessities of life.” I want to help my students begin to build their own personal libraries at home so that their parents can read with them. Studies show that children build a strong foundation for literacy when their parents read to them. In addition, children are more likely to work to improve their reading when they have positive emotions associated with books. Kylene Beers said it best: "If we teach a child to read but fail to develop a desire to read, we will have created a skilled nonreader, a literate illiterate. And no high test score will ever undo that damage."
