Ukuleles will be used to teach music reading and theory. Students will learn to play chords and will be able to accompany their own singing. It is a skill they will be able to take out of the music room and use for their entire life. We can use ukuleles in the classroom, in our programs and in our after school Orff ensemble. Ukuleles are a perfect instrument to introduce string instruments to our students. We have no string program in our district, and the ukulele is an easy starter instrument. The ukulele can be used to accompany the many Appalachian folk songs we learn in music class, which can make them more aware of their own cultural heritage.
