Several years ago, a student handed me a handwritten note saying, "I cannot go outside." He gave me the note after requesting to remain inside for recess. I told him I needed a note if he needed to stay in so he wrote one himself. When I read the note, I was impressed. He used his written skills to communicate just as I had taught him to do. He had wonderful spelling and mechanics. My students are intelligent, kind and resourceful. They apply what they know to their daily lives.
