Often times history becomes a boring lecture over names and dates. But, in the modern age, students need an environment that challenges them beyond their recitation skills. This past year I have embarked on a project that combines my World History class with an English class and awards credit for both of the subjects. This class is a project-based class and truly this has rocked my world. I have been able to see students engage with content at a deep level that actually excites them to come to school. This style of class is something that I would love to make available for all of my students. Even in our cell phone culture, the possibilities are still limited by the reality of school budgets. So many of the kids that I teach only have reliable connection to technology at school. While this generation is thought of as the technology age, there is serious gap in technological understanding specifically with high poverty students (for which I have many). The only way that I can combat this is by making technology readily available in my classroom and teaching the students to become comfortable with using technology. My students need Chromebooks for project-based learning. By focusing on comprehensive projects like National History Day, I can convert my World History class into a project-based format that engages the students to connect with world history, and specifically their own history. Through learning management systems like Google Classroom, I can facilitate historical research that challenges the students to learn beyond the resources I have in my classroom making it specific to their interests. This is the future of education and I need your help to make it possible for my classroom!
