My students are in an urban Illinois high school of medium size. They are of diverse ethnic backgrounds, from Asia, the Indian Sub-continent, Africa, the Middle East, Latin and Central America; most of whom speak a language other than English at home. My students are working hard to close the achievement gap, though they would tell you that they are just striving to do their best. Most of them will be the first in their families to attend college. Our students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and the vast majority of them are on a state funded free or reduced lunch program.
