My project aims to introduce graphing calculators to my students to show them they can do more than add or multiply numbers. Many of my students look to the calculator as a crutch to speed up work where I want them to discover that these calculators can help visualize problems or even make complicated work easier to handle. Technology can aid students in explorations of new material or allow for working with real-world data. I want to include more inquiry-based topics for my students to find patterns that exist throughout mathematics and technology. This will open many doors for me if I do this! At the ninth-grade level, graphing linear and quadratic functions are big topics and graphing calculators will allow the students to work with functions and numbers that suit their questions or tasks (take a look at those angry birds levels in my picture! It would be so fun to use statistical analysis to find a function from a picture YOU drew!) Along with the 5 the I have bought myself, a set of 10 calculators would in most cases allow me to have enough calculators for a pair of students to share and work together with. The end goal is to eventually have enough for each student to have a graphing calculator to use every day. (Added bonus, I would get to use these calculators with the newly created math team at our school)
