My goal is to help struggling readers in fifth grade learn to truly love reading. I hope to do this through novel studies by obtaining class sets of "Maniac Magee", by Jerry Spinelli, and "Schooled", by Gordon Korman. Both of these novels have strong characters who have to overcome adversity because they are different than their peers in some way. I hope to engage students in stories with relatable characters, exciting plots, and universal themes that are understood by people from all walks of life. These particular novels deal with accepting and understanding those with diverse backgrounds. The themes are thought-provoking and will lead to excellent and important discussion that can be applied to life.

About my class
