In Ninth Grade Composition and Literature we will read and work with the novel The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime that Changed Their Lives. The novel follows a hate crime that is committed on the school bus one day when students are going home. The novel follows the investigation into whether or not the crime should be classified as a hate crime and the consequences that every single student on the bus face from being part of the incident. "The 57 Bus" helps show students who are part of, or allies to, the LGBTQ community or face obstacles in life because of their ethnicity or social class that there are other people out there like them. The novel is non-fiction and would be the first non-fiction novel that would be added to our curriculum for ninth grade. The inclusion of a non-fiction novel will allow us to really dig into the non-fiction standards that the students will be interacting with in both ninth and tenth grade and help us to build skills that will follow them throughout high school. The unit this novel would be used in would allow us as a grade level to engage the students in research that is seeded in the world they are living in today. They will be able to read the original newspaper reports of the event and see the original news reports and compare it with this novelization. Students will be able to work with novel in order to grow their reading and writing skills, but also to grow as a person. The book will also allow us to discuss with our children the importance of communication, acceptance of others, and having empathy for people.
