The 2019-2020 school year marks my first year in my journey as a middle school counselor. I want to offer a calming space for my students where they can always feel welcomed & take a break from whatever else may be going on outside my walls. To do this, I want to offer my students a variety of ways to calm down, reset and feel at home. To set the overall mood of my office, I will have a couple lamps, rather than using the more harsh overhead lighting. To go along with this, I am asking for your help in providing an essential oil diffuser and salt lamp to use throughout the day. I plan on diffusing oils, such as lavender, to further promote a calming environment for students. With a Amazon tablet, I plan on downloading meditation and mindfulness apps that students can use to practice coping skills during stressful, scary or difficult times in their lives. Other materials such as coloring books & colored pencils, a sand tray, stress balls, and other manipulatives will aid students in learning to manage and regulate their emotions in healthy ways. With everything our students are facing on a day to day basis, it is imperative that they have a space that they can feel safe and calm. Additionally, I want to teach my students coping skills that they can use outside of my office to help them navigate the various challenges of life.
