Before creating the neon signs, my 8th graders will have an in-depth discussion with community leaders and the middle school alumni answering the question: What I wish I knew in the 8th grade? The purpose of the conversation is to begin open discussion about the common social issues middle schoolers at times face, like bullying, gossip, and interpersonal relationships. After our 8th graders reflect on the discussion and relate it to their own experiences, they will choose one inspirational word that they feel will aid in motivating them daily and will help them to self-affirm. The LED lights are important because I want our signs to shine bright during our scholars evenings at home so that they can be reminded of the great work we complete daily at school.
