I teach 9th through 12th grade Special Education students in the inner city who have a variety of disabilities, ranging from emotional disturbance to intellectual disability to cerebral palsy. Although many don't attend school on a regular basis (some have to take care of family members, some are involved in gangs, some are in jail) those who do attend class regularly deserve an education that is on par with students in wealthier neighborhoods around the country. One reason that my students' quality of education is lagging is due to the severe lack of in-class materials. We don't have textbooks for social studies or aptly-abled calculators for math. My students all have a desire to learn and should be provided with materials that will enable them to do so.
